Mbunjana Rescues Point as Galaxy Draw with Richards Bay
TS Galaxy fought hard to secure a 1-1 draw against Richards Bay on Wednesday, September 17, at King Zwelithini Stadium. The Rockets showed resilience under pressure, with Mlungisi Mbunjana scoring the crucial equaliser.
The game kicked off at a fast pace. Richards Bay created early chances through Wandile Ngema and Gabadinho Mhango. Ira Tapé was alert, saving well from Mhango in the 21st minute after a dangerous cross from Ngema.
The home side eventually broke the deadlock. In the 29th minute, Ngema struck a powerful right-footed shot from outside the box. His effort found the bottom left corner, giving Richards Bay a deserved 1-0 lead.
Galaxy responded quickly, pressing higher and forcing errors. Puso Dithejane and Sphesihle Maduna tested the Bay defence, while Mbunjana’s long-range effort went narrowly wide.
On the stroke of halftime, the Rockets found their breakthrough. Maduna delivered a teasing ball into the box. Mbunjana rose highest and guided his header into the bottom right corner. The visitors were level at 1-1, with halftime arriving moments later.
The second half opened with both sides pushing forward. Richards Bay threatened through Siyabonga Nzama, who came close with a shot that missed narrowly. Moments later, Mpho Mvelase forced a fine save from Salim Magoola with a header.
Both coaches turned to their benches as the game tightened. Richards Bay introduced Mahala, Mthethwa, and Mabuya, while Galaxy refreshed their attack with Junior Zindoga and Qobolwakhe Sibande.
The hosts pressed harder, creating clear opportunities. Simphiwe Mcineka missed a close-range header, while Nzama forced Tapé into another strong save. The Rockets relied on disciplined defending and quick counter-attacks to stay in the game.
The most dramatic moment came in the 86th minute. Richards Bay were awarded a penalty after Khulumani Ndamane fouled Wandile Ngema in the box. Tshepo Mabua stepped up, but his low strike was brilliantly saved by Tapé, who dived to his right to deny the home crowd joy.
Galaxy held firm in the closing stages despite heavy pressure. Mbunjana was booked late on for a foul, while substitutes Mory Keita and Onke Moletshe added fresh energy to see out the match. Richards Bay pushed until the end, but the Rockets’ defence stayed compact.
The final whistle confirmed a 1-1 draw. It was a tough contest where both sides had chances to win. Tapé’s penalty save proved decisive, while Mbunjana’s header ensured Galaxy left with a valuable away point.
Coach Sead Ramović will be proud of his team’s fighting spirit. Despite going behind, the Rockets showed composure and belief. Tapé’s heroics, coupled with a disciplined midfield, highlighted the team’s resilience.
With this result, TS Galaxy continue their steady run in the league. The Rockets now look ahead to their next challenge, determined to build momentum and climb higher on the table.
